Why this guide exists
One game changed the direction of my life.
I was a high school student when Notre Dame defeated No. 1 Miami in 1988. The drama got my attention, but Lou Holtz’s team left me with something deeper: a reason to work hard enough in school to earn a place at Notre Dame.
A few years later, I arrived on campus as a STEM major. That education led to a career in technology, largely in the Chicago area. Through the decades and hundreds of games, my love for the Notre Dame family has only grown.
This guide is my way of helping new fans find their own beginning—and, in 2026, honoring the coach whose example changed mine.
